Two thousand nine hundred and seventy-seven.

That’s the number of American flags placed on Santa Barbara’s West Beach to honor those lost on 9/11 — one flag for every victim killed on that day 14 years ago. The field of flags is organized by Young America. A foundation that places flag memorials around the country to ensure American youth never forget Sept. 11th.

The memorial on West Beach has been staged since 2003. Organizers said they’ll be back each year to remember those lost and mark the day our country changed forever.

Kirsten Wolfe at West Beach in Santa Barbara reflects on those lost, and the first responder’s gallant and heroic efforts. “Never forget!”
