Isla Vista in Santa Barbara, California

A campaign known as IV Safe has a media effort on TV (including NewsChannel 3), radio, and social medial promotes a positive image of Isla Vista and pride in the community.

Many residents and visitors who saw it today gave it good reviews. The Isla Vista community has seen several changes in recent years, including new lighting, landscaping, sidewalks and paving.

“I think it is good. I like the part where they mentioned adding light to Isla Vista. I know there was a decrease in crime after they added light to Del Playa,” said James Cornell a UC Santa Barbara student and Isla Vista resident.

Some dark, tragic events have given Isla Vista community leaders, residents and nearby UC Santa Barbara reasons to step up the positive IV campaign, and a new sense of pride in the now changing community.   In recent years, there have been riots, a murder spree, assaults and home invasion crimes.

Another component to this video are the background images which are paintings done by local Santa Barbara artist Chris Potter.  Chris is a graduate of UCSB (Jack Johnson’s roommate) and has a website that touts he paints a painting a day. They’re spectacular! Chris Potter’s Web Site
